One thing that can be said about auto insurance rates right now is that competition is fierce. Auto insurance companies are developing different techniques and pricing models to better predict risk. Progressive has Snapshot and Erie Insurance has Rate Lock. Many drivers living in Elizabethtown, Mount Joy and Marietta have saved money with these new options.
But I have to wonder if the different pricing models used by insurance companies are as accurate as they think. For example, I just insured a single 23 year old female with Erie Insurance and her premium was $600 less than Liberty Mutual. But the next day a family who had been insured with Erie for several years added their 17 year old daughter and switched to Liberty Mutual because the premium was almost $1,000 less.
Now I am not sure which pricing model is correct but it seems to me in one of these cases the pricing was not as accurate at it should be.
The lesson from this experience is that it does pay to comparison shop. But also remember that the lowest price is not always the best value. Always speak with your current agent to make sure that you are comparing similar coverages.
